Type Face Door Detail

A detail of the doors from the Worcester Public Library from 1964-1977, on display at the current library. From the commemorative plaque:

The overall design of the doors was made by graphic designer Leslie Segal of New York, using proofs made from antique wooden type faces that are now in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. These unusual type faces represent a high point in the craft of typography and illustrate over fifty styles of type.

Underbelly

Both sides of the bridge have massive amounts of graffiti, as you might expect, especially since easy access via cement steps is provided on both the Worcester and Shrewsbury sides of the lake.

I always liked the looks of the Route 9 bridge from afar, but a closer look reveals the crumbling infrastructure of so many of Massachusetts’ bridges and tunnels. I hope when it comes time to repair the bridge the graceful curves will remain.
